Tanner Polednak, Week 3

1. While teens are talked about so much in the media, seldom do they get a chance to say what they are feeling to an audience. The Roof is on Fire gave them a chance to do so in a public forum where people are listening.
2. The stage of this performance was on top of a parking garage with the students placed in cars with open windows.
3. Many of the high school students which were involved, were from impoverished or struggling homes and most were people of color. There had also been a riot that took place a week before the performance in the area it was in.
4. In this showing, the students shined the mirror back at the media which feigns their name and gave it a slice of the truth. Those who are easily swayed by the news must have been compelled to think twice.
5. The project was created for the students of the high school to get their voice out there and prove that while they are young they can still be intelligent and articulate about events that affect them in the world around them.
6. The engagement of the teens was crucial to the impact made by this piece, while there were sometimes challenges on directing a large group and allowing each one their personal input.
7. A useful resource that was used by the artists was the news coverage which it received, since that was among the targeted audiences.
8. The primary objective was to give a voice to the voiceless. This was evident when in the documentary, the teen mother was able to speak freely about the misconceptions about being a teen mom and how she feels about it.
9. The project did not change the way teens are seen to the media, but it did give the students involved an opportunity to know that the things they think, do and say are nothing to feel remorse over, but should be shared and discussed.
10. The value that guided this project at its core was that instead of disregarding the opinions of the youth, they should be valued because their actions are ultimately a reflection of the greater society in which they live.
