I resonated with the roll of the artist sometimes not being an artist but a messenger of sorts. I find it challenging to relinquish your own artistic identity in service of a community and organization, however those artists who are apart of the community and must find a way to appease the organization is also a challenge. I also resonated with the idea of public art and the invented community whether or not it be ongoing or temporary. As a gay man I can imagine not to long ago there were very few gay communities that were established and thriving and through projects that build or connect communities through creating public art you are creating these communities identities and culture, which leaves a lot of pressure on the artist and their work to really help unite a community. I really enjoyed thinking about public art and site specific art having much more of a weight than adding beauty to a community, but also provoking culture within a community.
Is the process working with a community consensus based in the 'culture in action' project?
How does the artist leave their own ego behind and fully invest in what the community needs to discus?
How does the artist at the same time maintain their identity as an artist?
What are the effects on a community that comes together to create art for a dialogue?
How do you work with a community that believes they don't need to create a dialogue or does not have faith of improving the situation they are already in?
